In the last two years a whole product category appeared: AI visibility tools. Peec, Scrunch, Daydream, Limy, Profound, and a dozen more. Most of them lead with a dashboard showing how AI describes your brand. They're useful, and they're no longer all the same product. Some just report. Some generate content. One reacts to agents at the edge. But across the whole range, the same question is left on the table after you've stared at the dashboard: now what, for the buyer being evaluated right now?
The category isn't one thing anymore
Early on, every AI visibility tool did the same job: run buyer-style prompts against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, and chart whether you got mentioned. That common core still exists. But the category has split into three tiers:
- Trackers. They observe and report. Mentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice against competitors. A clean mirror of your current state.
- Content generators. They do the tracking, then also produce content, FAQ pages, structured assets, for your team to publish.
- Edge optimizers. They react to an AI agent when it arrives and serve it a reformatted, machine-readable version of your existing pages.
That's a real range, and it's worth knowing which tier a tool sits in before you buy. But notice what every tier shares. A tracker shows you the past. A content generator helps you prepare better pages for the future. An edge optimizer reformats the pages you already have. None of them authors a new answer to the specific question a buyer's agent is asking, in the moment it asks, on your site.
Why measurement came first
Worth being honest about why the category looks the way it does. A monitoring tool is far easier to build than a tool that answers live. Querying public AI engines and charting the results is a tractable engineering problem. Generating publishable content is harder. Detecting an AI agent on a customer's live site and answering its actual question, in real time, from governed content, without breaking anything, is harder still. So the market built outward from the easy end. That's not a criticism. It's just the order things get built when a new surface opens: measurement first, then content, then live response.
Which means the abundance of visibility tools isn't evidence that visibility is the whole solution. It's evidence that visibility was the first part anyone could ship.
What none of them does
Here's the loop a visibility tool puts you in, even the more advanced ones. It shows you a problem. You publish content, or it generates content for you to publish later, or it reformats your existing pages for crawlers. Then you wait for AI engines to recrawl and re-synthesize. You check whether the dashboard moved. Repeat.
Every version of that loop works in recrawl cycles, and every version reports on or prepares for evaluations rather than entering one. A buyer agent asks something hyper-specific, a fit question about a stack, a team size, a compliance edge case, and no page anywhere answers that exact combination. The agent infers. A visibility tool can show you, afterward, that the inference was wrong. It can't have answered the question in the moment, because that question existed only for the length of one evaluation. That's the gap the whole category leaves open.
What actually changes the answer
Three things move what AI tells a buyer about you:
- Your own pages, made legible. Facts in clean text, not trapped in PDFs or images or post-JavaScript renders. No contradictions between an old page and a new one. This is the agent-ready baseline, and it's high-leverage because your site is the source models trust most about you.
- The third-party record, corrected. G2, Capterra, Wikipedia, Reddit, directory listings. Slower, only partly in your control, but the inputs are fixable.
- A new answer authored on the spot. When a buyer agent shows up with a specific question, author the content and FAQs that answer it and serve them in the moment, from a knowledge base you govern, instead of letting the agent infer. This is the part no dashboard, no publish-and-wait content, and no markdown reformat can do, because the question only exists for the length of one evaluation.
A visibility tool is upstream of all three: it tells you where to point the effort. It is not a substitute for the effort, and for the third item it isn't even the right kind of tool.

Fairly, because these are competent products and naming the tier helps you choose:
